Alnwick Castle

Alnwick, Northumberland

Quick Guide
See below grid for details

Alnwick Castle is one of Europe’s finest castles. It is the second largest inhabited castle in England, the first being Windsor Castle.

It has been the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309. The earliest mention of Alnwick Castle in the history books appears soon after 1096 when Yves de Vescy became baron of Alnwick and erected the earliest parts of the Castle. The Castle was first restored by the 1st Lord Percy of Alnwick in the early 1300's and portions of this restoration remain today, including the Abbot's Tower, the Middle Gateway and the Constable's Tower.

Set in a stunning landscape it dominates the skyline, overlooking the historic market town of Alnwick. Dating from the 11th century it has a history as colourful as it is long, being at the centre of many of the country’s famous historical events from bloody Border battles to the dramatic intrigues of the Guy Fawkes plot.

Majestic and imposing, the Castle and Grounds are a ‘must see’ attraction and widely recognised as a setting for Harry Potter’s school, ‘Hogwarts’. Harry Spotter Tours of the places where memorable scenes from the Harry Potter films were shot take place daily and also feature the Castle's home-grown hero Harry Hotspur.  Alnwick Castle has many delights - wonderful medieval architecture, fine art treasures, luxurious State Rooms, beautiful setting, fun children’s activities, special events programme, quality dining and shopping.

This page is a Quick Guide, the idea of Quick Guides is to allow very basic information and linking forward information to be added to the system rather than having to wait until a full location guide has been developed. It should therefore be considered a development stage rather than a finished objective. Once more information is known the objective is to create either a Location or Featured Location page which has two grids and far more information.

Please let us know any other information that we can add to the Further information and Planning Grids or page and any errors that you discover. Before making a long trip to any location it is always wise to double check the current information, websites like magazines may be correct at the time the information is written, but things change and it is of course impossible to double check all entries on a regular basis. If you have any good photographs that you feel would improve the illustration of this page then please let us have copies. In referring to this page it is helpful if you quote the CIN Page Ref at the bottom of the Planning Grid above. To print the planning grid select it then right click and print the selected area.

Please submit information on locations you discover so that this system continues to grow.
