Tattershall Castle

Tattershall, Lincolnshire

Location Guide

Tattershall is a Medieval brick castle built by Ralph Cromwell, Lord Treasurer of England in 1434. It rises dramatically above the Lincolnshire countryside. Of the original castle just the keep and moat still remain. Within you can explore six floors from the cellar to the battlements by climbing 150 steps, find out more about 15th-century life using the audio guide and walk in the grounds, over bridges over moats.

Tattershall has two moats which encircle the tower. Once you reach the battlements at the top there are stunning views of the countryside around and castle grounds below.

Within the grounds the Medieval Guardhouse, is believed to have served one of the Castle's original bridges. By the 17th century it had been converted into farm labourers' cottages, today it is home to the gift shop. The Tiltyard to the south of the Castle was a jousting arena and would have had sounds of the clashes and cries of knights in combat. Today it is a wild flower meadow and important nature conservation site.
