Norton Sub Hamdon Dovecote

nr Montacute, Somerset

Location Guide

This 17th century Dovecote or Pigeon House, as it is known locally, stands on ground which formerly belonged to the manor, and supplied pigeons for the manor table. It is now within the grounds of St Mary's Churchyard. It is circular and made of local Ham stone coursed rubble with a cone shaped stone slate roof in which there are two dormer windows. The cupola is formed by a flat stone slab supported on four small stone pillars, and topped by an ornamental knob. There is a low plain doorway in north side, and small dormer window with stone slate roof and checks to southwest.

Inside are 400 stone nests. A rotating wooden staircase which would have been used to service the nests is no longer present.

Originally it was attached to the manor house but it was enclosed into the churchyard when it was extended.

The picture on the right was taken from outside the churchyard as we approached from Church Lane.
