| Monkstone Lighthouse is located in the Bristol Channel, near Lavernock Point,
Glamorgan. The lighthouse is built on an
underwater rock located about 5km (3 miles) east northeast of Lavernock
Point and 8km (5 miles) south of Cardiff.
The lighthouse consists of a masonry tower
built in 1839, metal tower, gallery and lantern added in 1925, and lit for the
first time.
Strengthened by vertical and
horizontal wrought iron bands.
Prefabricated red GRP tower on top
that
replaced the original iron structure in 1993.
So today we have the original 14m (45ft)
stone tower with gallery, topped by a 9m (30ft) round cylindrical red
fibreglass tower with its own small lantern and gallery.
In addition to the red top structure the
wrought iron uprights and bands are painted red
In total it is a structure that is 23m or 75ft
high.
When the tide is out this is all, or most of it
is visible, at other times its partly concealed.
In 1993 at the same time as the structure was
enlarged it was converted to solar power.

I haven't been able to find so far
anywhere an image of what this looked like prior to the metal part being
removed from the Tower in 1993 and the new piece added. No searches
anywhere bring anything up. I suspect it was known by another name up to
