Channory Lighthouse was originally a 'one-man'
station and is situated on the Black Isle, south of Rosemarkie, between Channory
Point and Fort George. It was built by Alan Stevenson and was operational
in 1846 and it was automated in 1984 and now privately owned.
This is in an area known as Chanonry Ness which
is a sharp point at the end of a sandy spit projecting southward into the Moray
Firth at the beginning of the approach to Inverness. It is also said to be one
of the best sports to view Bottlenose Dolphins from the land. They are often
visible, particularly on an incoming tide when they play and fish in the strong
currents.

The dolphins are a regular feature
throughout the year, but your chances of seeing them are increased when their
food supply increases, when salmon are returning to their spawning grounds up to
rivers that join here. Pick days with midday low tides or the larges difference
between low and high tide. Midsummer offer the best light for photography from
late afternoon onwards, a good 200mm or 300mm lens should be good enough to get
good closeups and images like the one above. This area has been featured on many
TV programmes, including BBC Coast, Springwatch and others, so it is popular
with visitors.

Getting there: |
Located at the end of Ness Road 1.5 miles southeast of Fortrose. Can drive,
but busy in peak times, access is a short walk round to the point following
the path between two cottages. Alternatively from Rosemarkie there is a path
that arrives at the point. |
