Located at the northwestern point of the Isle of Skye on the tip of the
Waternish
peninsula at Waternish Point. Accessible by walking from the end of
the road near Trumpan.
The Northern Lighthouse Board refer to this
lighthouse as Vaternish. The NLB have operated gas powered systems for more
than 100 years, these were the first automatic lights in Scotland. In
general they were installed where a low range, less than 10 miles was
required. A local attendant ensured that the gas supply was available and
that the gas mantle was in good condition, and therefore the light was
working.
The structure of the lighthouse, built in
1980, consists of a concrete base, aluminium lightroom and a GRP roof. This
lighthouse was selected in 2001 for solarisation and modernisation, hence
the solar panels you can see on the side.
