Haulbowline Lighthouse

Down, Northern Ireland

Location Guide

This lighthouse is built on a dangerous rock which is only exposed at low tide, in the middle of the entrance to Carlingford Lough, just on the north side of the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The shore station was at Cranfield Point until 1922, and then at Greencastle.

It was the first Irish offshore light to be automated, in 1965. There is a secondary lantern halfway up the tower, the white balcony feature. Until 1922, this lantern displayed a "half tide" light to inform mariners that the tide was high enough for vessels to enter the lough.
