Tatton Park - Home Farm

Home Farm is a 1930's working Rare Breeds Farm
set within the grounds of Tatton Park nr Knutsford, Cheshire. It has a history
dating back to Bronze Age farming and has been home to herds of deer since the
13th century. In the late Tudor period the park was acquired by the Egerton
family who owned the estate until the last Lord Egerton died without heirs in
1958. Maurice Egerton left the estate to the National Trust and in 1960 a lease
was drawn up with Cheshire County Council who have since managed and financed
the property on behalf of the National Trust.
| At Home Farm, time has stood still. It
is a fully functioning authentic 1930's working Rare Breeds farm, using
traditional methods. It is set in a corner of the park known as Tatton
Dale and was, in its heyday, at the heart of the vast Egerton estates,
feeding family, guests and staff at the mansion, as well as servicing
the park and the outlying properties. It retains the features of a
1930's farmyard. and is a working farm where the real sights and smells
of the farm can be appreciated.. The yard is predominantly cobbled
although the cobbles well maintained.
Animals found on the farm include, Pigs, 6
rare breeds of pig including the Tamworth, Large Black, Middle White,
Berkshire, Saddleback and Gloucestershire Old Spot, they farrow twice a
year, so the potential to see a newborn litter each month. Horses - 3
Clydesdale's, 3 donkey's, Goats which can be fed, Herd of cattle
including breeds of Red Poll, Miniature Dexter and a Dairy Shorthorn, 45
Ewes, including Leicester Longwools,which lamb in March/April each year
as well as a sheep dog and traditional farm cat.
The farm shop offers a variety of farm-themed
gifts and books.
Nearby is Aunt Mary’s 1930s cottage - giving a
view on domestic life during this period in history.

There is also a working pottery producing
general domestic wares and frost-proof garden pots. The pottery is open
Wednesday to Sunday through the high season and weekends the rest of the time.
During certain times through the summer there
are activities taking place on the farm that you can get involved in including
Donkey grooming, scarecrow making, farmyard collage, meet the pigs, spinning,
make your own corn doll and ferret racing. At some points during the year you
may also get to see the steam engine running. Check out their

Tatton Park is signposted from Junction 7 of
the M56 and Junction 19 of the M6. The entrance to the park is approximately
half a mile from Knutsford Railway Station. |
