The remains of the turret

Banks Turrets 51B and 52A, well-preserved turret with adjoining stretches of Hadrian’s Wall. This section of the wall was built with turf plus stone turrets and milecastles. Pike Hill Signal Tower is at the same location.

The western 30 miles of Hadrian's Wall  was first built of turf, with stone turrets. About ten years later this section of the wall was rebuilt in stone. Milecastles were placed a roman mile apart and two turrets in between, a roman mile being a little smaller than a modern mile.

The wall was constructed in sections by different teams, in some places the break
 between one and other is visible

The day I visited and took these photos it was raining hard. Like all stone it has more colour when wet.
