Dungeness

nr Lydd, Kent

Location Guide

Dungeness forms the southern most point of the Romney Marsh in Kent and  is a national nature reserve managed by English Nature and the RSPB. It sits 3 miles out into the English Channel and is home to a unique variety of wildlife and more than 600 different types of plants. It is a shingle beach on the Kent/East Sussex border and has formed over the past 6000 years.

Mile after mile of shingle,  it is one of the most important sites for breeding colonies of gulls and terns and migrating birds such as Bewicks' swans and gadwall make their home here. On a cold winter's day, you can sit in the visitor centre and look out through a huge picture window at all the waterbirds on the large gravel pit just outside. Often a rare grebe or diver is among them, and the little smew. Nature trails lead around a series of hides where there is a chance of seeing bitterns and bearded tits in winter. There is plenty to be seen at other times too. It is also one of the best places in Britain to find rare species of moths, butterflies, bees, beetles and spiders.

At the 'end of the line' for the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, which claims to be the smallest public railway in the world have a gauge of just 15 inches. There are two nuclear power stations, both the New and Old Lighthouses, fishing boats, picturesque little cottages and other buildings as well as a vast array of sea views, which can be captured at all times of the year and day.
