Welcome to the start of Spring. March always ushers in the start of a new wildlife year, there have been many new visitors in my town garden with Robins, Blackbirds and Blue Tits all attacking my garden baskets and last years grass cuttings and flying off with beaks full of bedding material for their new or refurbished nests. There is more bird song and dancing on the lawn as they try to encourage food out from underground. Other wildlife and nature highlights this month also includes the Mad March Hares if you manage to see them, woodland floors start to burst into life and the Blackthorn flowers.

Your First Visit

March Diary

Today is St David's Day and Wales' national flower the Daffodil will start to appear in gardens, woodlands and along the roadside throughout the country. If you would like some really good locations to go and see them take a look at our Daffodil location list.

At the end of the month is Easter and over this weekend many different events take place and our diary lists some of them, including some of the more quirky UK events that take place over the Bank Holiday period. The Easter holidays is also when many of our visitor attractions that close down for the winter, open their doors again and you will find many amongst the pages of this site. Take a look at our county index and see what is available in your area, or the area you will be visiting during the holidays. The majority of our location pages have photographs so that you can see what is there before you visit and together with the planning information allows you the plan your visit.

Baconsthorpe Castle in Norfolk, originally a moated Manor House, now a ruin but with the moat and large lake to the east side still there. This is a new location added created by one of our readers with some photographs that she took when visiting last year. Baconsthorpe is open all year round, so you can go anytime or many times. We do like to hear from you and find out about the places you visit, the personal comments you make are just as useful to others as the technical and historical information that makes the place so interesting. Photographs are always a plus as this helps to illustrate what is there and what can be seen when we visit.

March is also the main photographic show of the year, the Annual Focus on Imaging Show at the NEC in Birmingham, from the 3rd to 6th. Take a look at the March diary for links and more information. If you want to get an idea of what the show is about then take a look at our Focus reports from previous years.

Don't forget on the 31st March the clocks FORWARD one hour. So with lighter days there will be more opportunities to get out and take photos.

Let's Explain How This Resource Works

One of the most popular features is a monthly diary covering interesting and unusual things on, around the UK, in the two months ahead.

Everything that appears, or ever has, is indexed in a number of ways, alphabetically, by topic, by county, and often linked into sections. Many of the sections have their own front doorways so people with specific interests have direct access through these doors to their area of interest.

Up until July 2012 we also produced a monthly newsletter as apart of this resource, but like magazines going over the years we found it becoming a little repetitive, so decided to concentrate on the resource development and drop the newsletter issues. You can get back to see every newsletter, from the beginning, via our recent editions link.

All of our links are coded showing you if it's an external link or one of our own pages and when it is, the type of page it is. You will find a key to the most popular ones at the bottom of the contents panel on the left and clicking on any of the symbols will bring up a full list. Holding your mouse over one of these symbols tells you what it means.

If this is your first visit, click here to find out how you might best use this site to help you find what you are looking for.
