February brings the rain, thaws the frozen pond again…

What to See	Where to See and comment	What it looks like
Geese and ducks Barnacle Goose	Continue to feed in wetlands and estuaries. At our wetland centres you should find large flocks of Barnacle Geese at Caerlaverock WWT Dumfriesshire
Swans Mute Swan Whooper Swan Bewick Swan	Large flocks of swans can usually be seen during the winter at Slimbridge WWT in Gloucestershire when they come in for they evening feeds at around 4pm. Swan Upping - The annual Census of the population of Mute Swans on the River Thames taking place during 3rd week of July. Locations to see & photograph swans in the UK
Waxwings	Continue to forage for berries in the hedgerows.
Redwings	Continue to forage for berries in the hedgerows, and gardens obtaining energy ready for their migration.
Fieldfares	Continue to forage for berries in the hedgerows.
Grey Heron	Busy themselves with mating rituals and nest building in the treetops at the Heronry.
Blue Tits	Are looking for places to nest
Great Crested Grebe	The fortunate few may witness their courtship Marj Kibby
Greater Spotted Woodpecker Great Spotted Woodpecker	You may hear them drilling into the trunk of a tree or see them at work.
Honey Bees	Early ones may be seen gathering nectar and pollen.
Frogspawn	Is starting to become a common sight in ponds throughout the country
Wintering Duck	Are at their finest as they are courting crazy before flying north to breed elsewhere.

Plantlife

What to See	Where to See and comment	What it looks like
Snowdrops	Appear in profusion in the woodland floors. See our location guide on Snowdrop Valley as well as our list Where to Photograph Snowdrops.
Hazel catkins	or Lamb's tails hang from the leafless tree branches but also notice the female buds with their little red tentacles to trap the pollen as it passes by. Jane Cockman
Pussy Willows
Crocuses	in their yellows, purples and vast colour spectrum start to appear in town parks, at the roadside and in gardens.
Winter Aconite	Their yellow flowers may start to appear in woodlands and in your gardens.
Bluebells	Their leaves start to push through the earth in the woodland floor.
Wild Garlic	The first signs of their leaves start to show through the dark browns of the woodland floor.
Lords and Ladies
Dog’s Mercury
Violets	the early variety start to push their leaves through the surface of the woodland floor.
Week Violet
Coltsfoot
