Hidcote Manor Gardens

Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire

Featured Location Guide

Hidcote is one of England's great gardens and was designed and created by the horticulturist Major Lawrence Johnston in the Arts & Crafts style. In Johnston's never-ending quest to get rare and exotic plants he sponsored and took part in plant hunting expeditions. Trips which took him to the Alps, Kenya and South Africa, while he also swapped plants with the Australians and Japanese. These expeditions introduced over 40 new species to the UK.

This garden is:
  • Nestled in the Cotswolds with stunning panoramas across the Vale of Evesham
  • Celebrated 20th-century garden in the beautiful north Cotswolds
  • One of England's greatest gardens, an Arts & Crafts masterpiece
  • Series of outdoor rooms each with its own unique character
  • Old roses, unusual plants and trees from around the world

It is made up of a series of garden rooms, each possessing its own character and combining masses of colour with traditional garden crafts such as topiary.. You will discover rare shrubs and trees, herbaceous borders, which give a splash of colour from July, and unusual plant species. The garden change with the seasons, from vibrant spring bulbs to autumn's glorious Red Border. It contains hedges, walls, water and paving and the 'jungly' planting of rich colour and texture are contrasted with plain areas that give calm and restful interludes. Walk amongst the old scented roses. Many varieties bear the name Hidcote.

There is so much to see here that a mere list of the numerous compartments and their incredible range of rare and interesting plants, some of which carry the Hidcote name, would be tedious and could never do justice to seeing the real thing. It is the most influential garden of the 20th century and is at its core a plantsman's garden.

Take your time to go round and don't forget  to take the camera and be aware it can be crowded at weekends.
