Great Spotted Woodpecker

January has been a bit wet, cold and windy and we are not quite finished with winter yet. There are still loads of photographic opportunities to be had around the country, from the floods in the north, the snow in Scotland and the wildlife. I have also started to see the smaller birds flying around the town and in my back garden, the pigeons and seagulls are always there. A trip to a Wetland Centre like the one at Slimbridge WWT, in Gloucestershire will give you ample opportunities to get some photos of swans, both the permanent ones and the visiting Bewick's Swan , as well as other waders. Their hides giving you a place to view out of the wind.

With the unusual weather we have been having, some of nature is a bit confused. I haven't see any signs of the Snowdrops in my garden yet, but the big houses and estates in the Cotswolds are putting up their signs for their snowdrop weekends starting next weekend. So keep an eye open locally you may find them popping out near you. As well as the white carpets in woodlands, like the photo below, you could also use a tripod and a macro lens to get a little closer.

Macro or Micro photography the art of taking things close up, with example images.

Your First Visit

Take a look closer and see what is on your doorstep, you might be surprised at what you see. In our road one of the cherry blossom trees has come out in flower again and is a mass of pink, this is early! Some of the other trees are starting to show the signs of green shoots. As well as the snowdrops you will also find colourful crocuses and of course some of you will have already had the daffodils out. Even in the winter months there is still a lot of see, do and photograph, no end of possibilities.

We are upgrading this website

We are moving from a Microsoft Frontpage based website to something much newer and more flexible, run on our Apple systems. This is a major change and is going on in the background.

Our Windows computer is often difficult to start and we have decided that should it fail, before the new system is live, we will allow a gap of a month or two to occur rather than waste time setting up outdated systems as a temporary measure. So if we go missing for a month or two please check back regularly as we will be back. Hopefully there will be no problem and we will be able, in the near future, to switch over to the new system and as you may have noticed we have been out collecting a vast amount of more information to expand it.

Let's Explain How This Resource Works

Our most popular feature is the monthly diary covering interesting and unusual things on, around the UK, in the two months ahead. Our monthly front page/newsletter, from the beginning, is still available and can be accessed via our 'recent editions' link.

Everything that appears amongst these pages, or ever has, is indexed in a number of ways, alphabetically, by topic, by county, and often linked in to sections. Many of the sections have their own front doorways so people with specific interests have direct access through these doors to their area of interest.

All of our links are coded showing you if it's an external link or one of our own pages and when it is, the type of page it is. A key to the most popular codes is at the bottom of the contents panel on the left and clicking on any of the symbols will bring up a full list. On any page, holding your mouse over one of these symbols tells you what it means.
