Blackpool Illuminations

1st September to 5th November 2017 Blackpool, Lancashire. The illuminations have been a major part of Blackpool since 1879. The first night is the big switch on, the best time to visit is after the clocks change when the evenings are darker. Great night time photography not only from the lights, but also all the attractions on the piers.

Firework display teams compete with a 10 minute firework display choreographed to music each, and 5 minute interval between each display. Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing

2nd and 3rd September 2017 Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire. Sat Procession runs from 10am at Warley, and finishes at the Canal Basin. Sunday Procession starts at 11:45am St Peters Church and finishes at St Bartholomew’s Church, Ripponden. A rushcart is pulled by local men in panama hats, white shirts, black trousers and clogs. A team of women take turns in sitting on top of the cart. The procession is accompanied by five or six teams of Morris dancers. It stops on route to present token rushes to churches, to perform a mumming play and to dance outside the pubs and more.....

The Great River Race - London

Starts at 9am at London Docklands, first boat off at 11am. The race along the River Thames, from London Docklands to Ham in Surrey, covering 21.6 miles. Over 300 International Crews in different rowing boats take part, from those that dress in fancy dress to the serious sports men and women who are in it to win it.

Hop Hoodening

Canterbury, Kent. Celebrates the harvesting of the Hops. Celebrations begin with a procession through the shopping precincts to the cathedral by the Hop Queen in a Hop Bower, followed by country dancers and Morris men. It is usually also accompanied by 2 Hooden Horses. Expected at Cathedral by 11am.

World Black Pudding Throwing Championships

The Oaks, Bridge Street, Ramsbottom, Lancs. 12noon onwards. The aim of the Black Pudding Throwing Championships is to throw a black pudding that has been ‘swaddled’ or wrapped in a pair of ladies tights at a collection of Yorkshire puddings on a plinth 20 feet up on the side of the pub wall.

Abbots Bromley Horn Dance

Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire. 7:45am Collect the Antlers from the church and the dancing starts on the village green at 8:15am. The dance consists of 12 dancers, 6x carrying reindeer antlers, accompanied by the hobby horse, a jester, Maid Marian, a boy carrying a bow and arrow, a musician playing an accordion and a boy playing the triangle keeping the beat of the music for the dancers as they walk about 10 miles to different locations. Also on the village green will be exhibitions, craft stalls.

World Stone Skimming Championships

Easdale Island, nr Oban, Scotland. Starts 12noon. Held every year for any age, each competitor gets 3 skims using special stones, for a skim to qualify the stone must bounced at least 3 times and it is then judged on the distance it travels.

Three Peaks Cyclo Cross Race

A 38 mile cross country bike race across the Yorkshire Dales National Park, that climbs the Yorkshire Three Peaks around the Ribble Valley. Starts on roads then the remaining 20 miles is off road. First peak to climb is Ingleborough, then Whernside the largest at 2000ft and 3rd peak is Pen-y-ghent. When they are not able to ride bike, they have to run and carry. Riders are given 3 tags at the start which are handed to officials at the top of each peak so that they can make sure no one gets lost.

The Enchanted Forest Force of Nature

28th September to 29th October 2017 An outdoor sound and light show in Faskally Wood, Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland. A night/light spectacular which attracts around 20,000 visitors each year.
