Last week we took a trip down to Hythe near Southampton to watch the largest cruise ship, Harmony of the Seas, leave for one of it's trips to Cherbourg. We took a seat along the front of Hythe Marina and could see it on the other side docked up and we sat patiently until 6pm, when it was scheduled to leave. It left it's moorings on time and then appeared to be

travelling in the wrong direction, but it had to turn around and this operation took it 30 minutes. So after 30 minutes of their voyage they were still in Southampton Harbour. Once it was going in the right direction it passed Hythe Pier and continued out of harbour until it disappeared into the distance. Although a sunny afternoon it was behind us so it proved to be a great photo opportunity with great skies and a clam sea in the foreground. Summer is here again and there are so many opportunities in the wildlife and nature world for photographers the choice is endless. Whatever your interest there is something for you. This month is Puffin month when the Puffin areas around the UK, like Skomer Island off West Wales and the Farne Islands off the coast of  Northumberland are teeming with parent puffins flying off out to sea to catch food for their new arrivals who are tucked away in burrows on the islands. June is also the month when all the smaller creatures start to re-appear such as dragonflies, damsel flies on ponds and rivers, and butterflies in gardens and hedgerows. The larger Red Admiral and Peacock Butterflies are a colourful combination which can be found in your garden and are usually easier to spot.

Gardens are now starting to take on their abundance of colours and structures. Take time out for a visit to the many gardens open to the public around the UK, but also more local are the private gardens that open to the public during the National Garden Scheme (NGS) Gardens Festival Weekend on the 4th and 5th June, where over 400 gardens across England and Wales open their gates to raise money for charity. If you intend to pop along to one of these private gardens, open under the NGS Scheme, then as a courtesy ask if its okay to take photographs of their spectacular creations. We are continuing to upgrade this website

It is taking time, but we are continuing to move from a Microsoft based website to something much newer and more flexible, run on our Apple systems. This is a major change and is going on in the background.

Our Windows computer is often difficult to start and we have decided that should it fail, before the new system is live, we will allow a gap of a month or two to occur rather than waste time setting up outdated systems as a temporary measure. So if we go missing for a month or two please check back regularly as we will be back. Hopefully there will be no problem and we will be able, in the near future, to switch over to the new system and as you may have noticed we have been out collecting a vast amount of more information to expand it.

Let's Explain How This Resource Works

Our most popular feature is the monthly diary covering interesting and unusual things on, around the UK, in the two months ahead. Our monthly front page/newsletter, from the beginning, is still available and can be accessed via our 'recent editions' link.

Everything that appears amongst these pages, or ever has, is indexed in a number of ways, alphabetically, by topic, by county, and often linked in to sections. Many of the sections have their own front doorways so people with specific interests have direct access through these doors to their area of interest.

All of our links are coded showing you if it's an external link or one of our own pages and when it is, the type of page it is. A key to the most popular codes is at the bottom of the contents panel on the left and clicking on any of the symbols will bring up a full list. On any page, holding your mouse over one of these symbols tells you what it means.
